Water Filtration
Water Filtration vs. a Water Softener: What Actually Fixes the Problem?
Filtration and softening get confused constantly, and they solve two different problems. Buy the wrong one and the smell, taste or spots you called about in the first place are still there.
What a Softener Actually Does
A softener deals with hardness — the calcium and magnesium in the water that leave white spots on shower glass, build up inside pipes and water heaters over time, and make soap harder to rinse off. It does not touch smell or taste on its own.
What Whole Home Filtration Actually Does
Filtration is about what is in the water beyond hardness — chlorine taste, sulfur smell, sediment, or whatever is making the water unpleasant to drink, cook with or shower in. Some systems combine filtration and softening in one unit when a home needs both.
How to Tell Which One You Need
- White spots on shower glass and fixtures that come back no matter how much you scrub — usually hardness
- A smell that comes and goes at the tap, or water that tastes off — usually filtration
- Soap that will not lather or rinse clean — usually hardness
- Both at once — some homes need both, and a test at the sink tells you, not a guess over the phone
We test your water at your own kitchen sink, in front of you, and show you the numbers before anyone mentions equipment. Twenty minutes, and you keep the results either way.
